Catching Tips
from Tom Griffin
Controlling the Game.
Catchers
need to take control of a game when they are on defense. the catcher
is the leader on the field. think of yourself as an orchestra leader.
Several things you can do:
1. Always
hustle on and off the field
2. When
your pitcher is throwing strikes, get the ball back to him quickly
and get him to work. If he is not throwing strkes, take more time
between pitches to break up the poor rhythm. Don't be hesitant to
take a trip out to the mound. If for anything else but to slow the
pitcher down and get him to gather himself.
3. Be vocal.
Keep everyone aware that the next ball hit is coming to them. Have
a feel for what players may not be focusing on a ball coming to them.
With men on base, general reminders of what to do when they get the
ball is helpful. Communication to all players is very important.
4. Develop
a postive relationship with the home plate umpire. Never show him
up. This will help your pitcher and you as a batter.
Be active and communicate. You are an important part of your team's
success, take the role as a leader seriously and do not act as a backstop.
