Catching Tips
from Tom Griffin
Tip: Breaking in a
New Glove:
When breaking in a new glove or caring for a catching glove, important
reminders:
-Breaking in your glove is a personal preference. There are many different
ways to break in a glove. Personally speaking, I prefer a little leather
conditioner or glove oil. Not too much, but enough to work into the
leather with your hands. Use a baseball and pound into the pocket
to help soften.
-Play catch with it. That's the best way to break it in.
-Use shaving cream to clean your glove. Put it all over the glove, wipe
in, use a towel to clean off dirt.
-Check strings to see if any are about to break.
-Place a softball or two baseballs in the pocket, use string, belt or
heavy duty rubber band, to keep pocket closed.
-You want a flat pocket versus a deep one. Push fingers down to help
form the pocket.
-When not using it in a game, lay with palm down to the ground, wide
open. Avoid putting anything on top of it.
-NEVER USE IT TO CLEAN OFF THE PLATE!!!!
