Catching Tips
from Tom Griffin
KNEE SAVERS:
I am not a medical expert, but I do feel that using knee savers is a
waste of money. Many young players seem to sit back on them too much, and the
weight is distributed improperly in the stance. Your legs will develop to handle
the workload and stress associated with squating. Using crutches will not
help in the development. To develop the maximum strength in your lower half,
to
handle the position of catching, the best way is to catch or to be in the
catching positon for drills as much as possible. There is no substitute. If you
cannot squat for periods of time (Let's say a bullpen session), you should
find a new position.
How did guys catch 10, 20 and 30 years ago without these things?
